What are the main differences between LCD and OLED screens?
2022-06-30
OLED screens are characterized by their self-emissive nature, not requiring a backlight. This results in wide viewing angles, high contrast, low power consumption, fast response times, a wide color gamut, and a simpler manufacturing process. It's safe to say that OLED screens represent a novel screen material in the current market, used in most high-specification mobile phones. LCD screens, on the other hand, require a backlight and produce polarized light through layers of glass, substrates, optical films, alignment films, and color filters, leading to some deviations in brightness and color.
Currently, LCD screens can be divided into TFT and IPS. Both technologies aim to improve display quality, but differ in their methods and technologies. Firstly, TFT deposits a thin film on a glass substrate to serve as a channel region, using relevant transistor technology to improve image quality. Simply put, it controls each pixel for high-speed, high-brightness, and high-contrast display, resulting in screen backlighting and higher power consumption. However, the screen's color saturation, color reproduction, and response time are satisfactory. IPS technology's advantage lies in changing the arrangement of liquid crystal molecules to accelerate the deflection speed, ensuring image clarity during screen shaking and eliminating the inevitable blurring and streak diffusion of traditional LCD screens under certain conditions. Furthermore, IPS screens can achieve a near 180-degree viewing angle on four axes, exhibiting better viewing angles and richer color display than TFT screens. However, response speed is relatively slow, and its thickness control is not suitable for the mainstream thin design.
In essence, an OLED screen is an organic light-emitting diode, which can be categorized into passive and active organic light-emitting diodes. The OLED screens currently available on the market are mainly active organic light-emitting diodes. We will mainly introduce the mainstream active organic light-emitting diode, also known as AMOLED, which uses Pentile pixel arrangement. Compared to the same resolution, it has a stronger graininess. Furthermore, without backlight support, AMOLED screens perform generally in outdoor environments. Currently, AMOLED screens have developed to the third generation: Super AMOLED Plus, which mainly addresses the long-criticized issue of large display graininess, while the display effect is also developing in a more refined direction.
How is an OLED screen better than an LCD screen? 1. OLED screens emit light themselves, so the brightness of organic light-emitting diode screens is much higher than that of LCD screens, and the color effect is better! 2. OLED screens have a wider viewing angle, reaching about 160 degrees. 3. OLED screens are thinner, lighter, and cheaper, and organic light-emitting diode screens are flexible and bendable. Summary: In terms of screen materials, Super AMOLED > AMOLED > LCD screen, so when buying a Mobile phone in the future, try to choose an AMOLED screen! After all, compared with LCD screens, it has so many advantages!
